Saree for Beginners: How to Wear a Saree Without Draping
Share
What is the easiest way to wear a saree if you are a beginner? A pre-draped saree. Its pleats and pallu are stitched in place, so you wrap it, clip it at the waistband, place the pallu over your shoulder and you are ready in minutes, with no pleating, no pins and no draping skills needed.
Why a traditional saree feels hard at first
A traditional saree is about 5.5 to 6 metres long and 1.1 to 1.2 metres wide. You wrap it, fold the pleats by hand, tuck them in and drape the pallu, and you usually need pins to hold it all in place. It takes practice, and it is easy to feel unsure the first few times. If you want the full numbers, see our saree length guide.
The no-draping option: a pre-draped saree
A pre-draped saree (also called a pre-stitched or ready-to-wear saree) has its pleats and pallu stitched in place, so it goes on like a skirt in minutes. It keeps the look of a traditional saree without the pleating and pinning. Our ready-to-wear sarees are also lined, so you do not need a petticoat.
How to wear a Rebel Roots saree in 6 steps
These steps follow our how-to-wear video guide.
- Start with the saree behind you on the left.
- Bring it across your waist to the right.
- Clip it into the adjustable waistband for a snug, comfortable fit.
- Use the next clip to secure the pleats and center them neatly.
- Wrap the rest of the fabric around, bring it forward and place the pre-pleated pallu over your left shoulder.
- Adjust as you like, then secure it with the RebelRoots complementary magnet included in your package, or a quick pin.
Some styles are made a little differently. Our Forest Floor sarees are constructed like a skirt with a side zipper and an adjustable inner waistband, so check the product page for the style you choose.
Short or Tall: which length is right for you?
You do not pick a length in metres. You pick Short or Tall by your height.
- Short: 5'4" (162 cm) and below.
- Tall: 5'5" (165 cm) and above.
If you are in-between sizes and plan to wear high heels, choose Tall. If you prefer flats and ease of movement, choose Short. See the full size chart for dress and top sizes.
